The Parish Councils of Burstow and Horne are holding a VE Day celebration/commemoration
on Friday 8th May from 2.00 to 9.00pm at the Centenary Hall on Wheelers lane, Smallfield.
All are invited to join us to mark the occasion. There will be music of the day, hog roast (limited to first come) market stalls, a small remembrance ceremony, children's entertainment and much more.
As part of the day we would like to hear your memories of how you and/or your family members felt as you heard the declaration of Victory in Europe. Please email your contributions to the Parish Clerk, Jeannie, at email@example.com and we will have a display at the Hall on the 8th May.
In addition we have heard stories of remarkable wartime achievements such as Diana Barnato-Walker of the Air Transport Auxiliary. The ATA was a British civilian organisation set up during the Second World War that ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between factories, assembly plants, delivery points, maintenance units, scrap yards and active service squadrons. It also flew service personnel on urgent duty from one place to another. Diana Barnato-Walker, who lived in Horne, flew over 80 types of aircraft and delivered 260 Spitfires.
If you know of any other local stories please write in so that we can note these people too. Our contact details are
